据明代《隆庆潮阳县志》载:大颠墓塔建后三年，开塔重修，僧人见大颠尸骨容颜如生，头发指甲俱长，于是未搬动而重建；唐末又重修，开启墓塔后，见大颠尸骨已化,“唯舌根尚存如生”。修复后人称“瘗舌冢”；宋朝至道年间,县秀士郑士明又开塔修墓,见塔中舌根已溶化,仅存“古镜一圆”,所以后人称“舌镜塔”。
